What is Silica Fume?
Silica fume is a co-product from the production of silicon or ferrosilicon metal. Silica fume is a mineral admixture, a very fine powder of spherical particles that average 0.1 to 0.3 microns in diameter with a surface area of 17 to 30 m2/g. Silica fume is used in a variety of cementitious concrete, grouts and mortars, refractory, elastomer and polymer applications. Silica fume powder is gray to off-white in color.
When silica fume is used in concrete, shotcrete and repair products, it performs as a filler, improving the physical structure by occupying the spaces between the cement particles, and as a reacting chemical (pozzolanic) to create greater strength and durability to concrete.
Silica Fume originates from the oxidation of the SiO gas produced during the fabrication of Silicon, Ferrosilicon alloys and CaSi alloys in electric furnaces. The SiO2 formed is then condensed into spherical particles and recovered in bag house filters.
Silica Fume consists in individual ultrafine particles of silicon dioxide with a high specific surface and an average diameter of 150nm which gives Silica Fume its high pozzolanic properties.
Silica Fume is an amorphous product. Its color ranges from white to dark grey and is available in densified and undensified forms.

Microsilica in application of Refractories
Silica Fume has a stable pH and a low impurity level and is perfectly adapted to the requirements of refractory castables. Its use improves the flow, mechanical properties (especially hot strength), and durability (via permeability reduction)
Silica fume use in refractory castables provides better particle packing. Silica fume use requires less water, while maintaining the same flow characteristics. Silica fume use also promotes low temperature sintering, and the formation of mullite in the matrix of castables. This allows production of castables which have a low permeability to gas, slag and metal penetration. Castables made with silica fume are stronger than non-silica fume castables, especially at high temperatures and higher density. Silica fume use will attain lower porosity and are more volume stable.
Oil Well Grouting
Whether used for primary (placement of grout as a hydraulic seal in the wellbore) or secondary applications (remedial operations including leak repairs, splits, closing of depleted zones), the addition of silica fume enables a well to achieve full production potential. Besides producing a blocking effect in the oil well grout that prevents gas migration, it provides these advantages:
Improved flow, for easier, more effective application
Dramatically decrease permeability, for better control of gas leakage
Increased durability and compressive strength
Refactory and Ceramics
The use of silica fume in refractory castables provides better particle packing. It allows for less water to be used while maintaining the same flow characteristics. Castables incorporating silica fume are stronger than non-silica fume containing castables especially at high temperatures with higher density they attain lower porosity and are more volume stable.
